It
would seem that it would be easy to talk about our Rio de Janeiro,
but it isn’t.
How can one explam so much beauty in such small
spaces along the beaches,
where young nymphets show off their
malicious bikinis with that charm that only Rio girls have.
The
young men, not wanting to be left out, drape their bodies over the
body building apparatus
strategically placed along the beach
front, and give off an air of smooth and easy technique
just after
a dip in the waves.
Since
I’m speaking about the beach, why don’t I mention the ever so
popular sport of beach volley ball.
Has anyone yet counted how
many volleyball “cobras” (hustlers ) and "peladeiros
"
(shirtless players) play every single weekend? There must
be literally thousands, Bernardinho,
the “King of Post 6” (beach
locations are
designated by numbered posts ali along
the beach front) tries to
play like Bernard (the former captam of the Brazilian nationai and
Oympic teams),
imitating his “Star Trek” high, looping serve
but most people aren’ t so showy.
They
just seem to pass their whole lives, from well coached toddlerhood
right through to their dotage
using voiley not only for exercise,
but also to participate in what may be Brazil’s second most
popular sport,
one that’s gaining new practitioners every day.
Beach volley has aiready spread
to other continents but it is here
in Rio, precisely here in Ipanema where every two years
the World
Beach Voíley Ball Doubles Championships are held.
Then
you can see the greatest piayers in the world saluting the
thousands of people
that eibow their way to the front to root for
their odols, wheter American, Japonise, Russsian,
Brazilians, or
other. We also have the marvelous spas and health clubs
where the
people of Rio dotheir aerobics, weight lifting, "low-impact",
or yoga.
There are also
those
who do their running out on the beach front sidewalk passing the
“Beautiful People”.
Though most are just trying to get in shape,
a few are trying to
rid themseives of the tensions a big city generates.
Once
a friend of mine told
me in confidence that when he arrived home tired, stressed out,
weighed down with work problems,
his best remedy was to put on his shorts,
T-shirt and tennis shoes
and head out for a one hour walk along
the beach front sidewalk.
That’s
why Rio is Rio, the marvelous
city, sung about in song and story the world
over. And it’s also
why we,
the Cariocas fall
more in love
with her every day that passes.
